Playing rugby, cricket and hockey in Buenos Aires

A rugby player arriving in November will find the Buenos Aires league season winding down, just as club cricket is getting going. Rugby runs roughly March to October, hockey March to November and cricket October to March. The choice of club depends as much on that calendar and the journey to training as on a familiar name.

These are member-owned associations, where a player joins as a socio, obtains an annual apto médico and is registered by the club for league matches. In September 2026, membership plus one sport typically costs ARS 80,000–200,000 a month, about US$50–130 or £40–100. From first contact to a match often takes one to three weeks; rugby clearance from abroad can extend that.

A club is more than its first team

Buenos Aires's multi-sport clubs are generally non-profit asociaciones civiles. A cuota social pays for membership, while a cuota deportiva covers each sport; some also have a cuota de ingreso, a joining fee that ranges from nothing to several thousand US dollars at the most exclusive clubs. Traditional clubs may ask for two existing members to propose a newcomer, although sports sections seeking players sometimes waive this. The club office can explain its current membership and guest terms, including any temporary or sports-only option.

The British origins of several clubs remain visible in their names and dates: Buenos Aires Cricket & Rugby Club was founded in 1864, Hurlingham Club in 1888, Lomas Athletic in 1891 and Belgrano Athletic in 1896. Today almost all their members are Argentine, and training and social life generally happen in Spanish. Rugby remains an amateur club sport; after the match, the home side hosts a tercer tiempo, the shared food and drink that extends the afternoon beyond the final whistle.

Which ground will you actually get to?

Belgrano Athletic and Club Ciudad de Buenos Aires are in CABA, the city proper; the other clubs below are in Buenos Aires province. A route that works for two weeknight sessions as well as a weekend match matters more than a one-off trip. Many members drive to suburban grounds, and sharing a lift after training is normal. A Belgrano household weighing the local club against San Isidro, for instance, would face a very different weekly journey even if both clubs offered the sport. Finding your level in each sport

The Unión de Rugby de Buenos Aires (URBA) runs club competition across the city and suburbs. Adult squads can span Primera, Intermedia and several Pre-intermedia sides, giving a newcomer a lower side to start with while learning the pace and Spanish calls. Training is commonly on two weeknights, with Saturday afternoon matches; the game is physical and the scrum matters. Many clubs also have over-35s veteranos friendlies and festivals, still contact rugby, while women's sides are growing, mainly in sevens. The club can say which women's teams are playing this season.

Hockey's large women's club scene has grown alongside the prominence of Las Leonas, the national team. The Asociación Amateur de Hockey de Buenos Aires (AHBA) runs the Metropolitano competition on synthetic pitches from roughly March to November; men's hockey is smaller but is played at many of the same clubs. For an adult woman coming back to hockey, mami hockey is recreational, mostly for over-30s, and usually combines one training session a week with a weekend match. Neither motherhood nor recent match experience is required. A composite stick costs around ARS 150,000–400,000 (US$100–260) locally; shin pads and a mouthguard are required.

Cricket is smaller, with Argentine Cricket Association (ACA) league and T20 matches at weekends from about October to March. Belgrano Athletic, Hurlingham, Lomas Athletic and Buenos Aires Cricket & Rugby Club have cricket sections; the ACA can identify which have teams this season. Sides mix Argentine, South Asian, South African and British players, and English is heard more often than in other club sports. Bats, pads and helmets are hard to buy locally, so players coming from abroad often bring their kit.

From a training session to a team sheet

A club's secretaría or sport coordinator is the first contact. Players generally describe their previous level and can often train a few times before joining. The annual apto médico is a clinical fitness check, usually with an ECG; a rugby club may ask for further tests. Private health plans, or prepagas, often cover it, while paying privately costs roughly ARS 40,000–80,000 (US$25–50). An expired certificate keeps a player off the team sheet until renewal.

Joining normally involves a passport or Argentine DNI if you have one, a photo, a form and payment of the first month and any joining fee. The club then completes the fichaje with URBA, AHBA or the ACA. Season registration carries player insurance aimed at serious injury; routine physio and scans go through a prepaga according to the plan's coverage. Players need that registration for league matches, as well as the club's match shirt and socks.

A rugby player previously registered with the RFU, WRU, SRU or IRFU may also need international clearance under World Rugby regulations. The Argentine club requests it and the old union releases the player; telling the former club secretary that a request is coming can prevent a delay. The medical, registration and any clearance are the practical difference between attending training and appearing in a league fixture.

What the first month might cost

A mid-sized club's illustrative September 2026 budget for two adults playing rugby and hockey puts the monthly charge at ARS 280,000 (US$181, about £135). Adding their season registrations and medical co-payments takes the first month to ARS 420,000 (US$272, about £200). These figures are an example rather than Belgrano Athletic's price list; club fees tend to rise every few months with inflation.

A hockey player bringing a stick avoids a local purchase of at least roughly US$100; a rugby player with a former union registration may instead have to allow extra time for clearance. The better long-term calculation includes getting to the ground often enough to know the side, and staying for the tercer tiempo once the match ends.
