Yoga, Fitness and Outdoor Exercise in Buenos Aires for British Expats
Where to exercise in Buenos Aires: yoga studios, gyms, outdoor fitness, running groups and the free municipal classes that locals use. A British fitness lover's guide.
I ran my first Buenos Aires 5K two weeks after arriving, in Bosques de Palermo, at 7 AM, in 25-degree heat that I was not prepared for. I nearly passed out. But the path was beautiful, the other runners were friendly, and I was hooked on outdoor exercise in a city that makes it genuinely easy.
Running
Buenos Aires is flat. Relentlessly, wonderfully flat. No hills, no inclines, no altitude training unless you count the bridge over the railway near Federico Lacroze. For runners this is paradise.
Best routes:
- Bosques de Palermo lake circuit: 5 km, shaded, flat, well-paved. The most popular route in the city. Busy 6-9 AM and 5-8 PM.
- Costanera Norte: riverside path, 8 km one way. Open, breezy, good for long runs. Less shade.
- Costanera Sur (Reserva Ecológica): 3 km through the nature reserve. Dirt paths, wildlife, quiet.
- Parque Centenario circuit: 1.5 km. Good for intervals. Less crowded than Palermo.
Buenos Aires Runners: the city's largest running club. Saturday morning group runs in Palermo at 8 AM. Free. All levels. Very social. Find them on Instagram @buenosairesrunners.
Parkrun: yes, Buenos Aires has parkrun. Every Saturday, 9 AM, Bosques de Palermo. Free, timed, register at parkrun.com.ar. Very British. Very welcoming.
Gyms
Argentine gyms are affordable and well-equipped:
- Megatlon: the largest chain. Modern equipment, group classes, pool at some locations. USD 50-80/month.
- SportClub: mid-range chain. Good for basics. USD 30-50/month.
- CrossFit boxes: multiple locations in Palermo and Villa Crespo. USD 80-120/month.
- Boutique studios: spinning, pilates, boxing, TRX. USD 60-100/month.
- Budget gyms: neighbourhood gyms with free weights and basic machines. USD 20-35/month.
Compare to London: PureGym £25-40, Virgin Active £60-100, Equinox £150+. Buenos Aires gives you mid-range quality at budget prices.
Yoga
Palermo is the yoga capital of Buenos Aires. Studios on every block:
- Buenos Aires Yoga (Palermo) — excellent English-language classes. Vinyasa, Hatha, Yin. Drop-in ARS 8,000-12,000 per class.
- The Yoga House (Palermo Soho) — boutique, intimate. English and Spanish. Monthly unlimited: USD 80-120.
- Moksha Yoga (Belgrano) — hot yoga. Popular with expats.
- Iyengar Yoga Buenos Aires — traditional Iyengar method. Spanish but technical enough to follow without fluent Spanish.
Free outdoor yoga: the municipality of Buenos Aires organises free yoga classes in parks (Bosques de Palermo, Parque Centenario, Barrancas de Belgrano). Check buenosaires.gob.ar/deportes for the current schedule. Quality varies but the setting is unbeatable.
Free municipal fitness
Buenos Aires City Government runs free outdoor fitness classes in parks across the city:
- Yoga
- Functional training
- Tai chi
- Dance fitness
- Stretching for seniors
These are genuine, instructor-led classes held in parks during spring, summer, and autumn. Bring a mat, wear trainers, show up. No registration needed. Schedules are published seasonally on the city website.
Swimming
Public pools: Buenos Aires has several municipal pools (piletas municipales) that are free or very cheap. Parque Roca, Parque Chacabuco, and Parque Sarmiento all have outdoor pools open in summer.
Private pools: Megatlon and some gyms have indoor pools. Monthly pool access: USD 40-60 extra.
River swimming: no. The Río de la Plata is not swimmable in Buenos Aires (pollution, currents). The nearest clean water swimming is the Paraná Delta (Tigre, 40 min north).
Cycling
Buenos Aires has an extensive Ecobici public bike-sharing system:
- 400+ stations across CABA
- Free for residents (register with DNI)
- 30-minute rides, unlimited per day
- Bikes are basic but functional
Dedicated cycle lanes run along most major avenues. The terrain is flat. Traffic is aggressive but cycle lanes are separated. Many British expats cycle daily for commuting and exercise.
