Arriving alone at an English pub quiz in Buenos Aires is quite ordinary: BA Trivia makes up teams at the door. It meets every Tuesday at Barú Gastropub in Palermo, with doors at 19:30 and questions from about 20:00. For a British match, the social part takes a little more planning. A Saturday 3pm UK kick-off falls at noon here in British winter, but 11am in summer, before some pubs open.

A Tuesday quiz with room for a new teammate

Cinema, music, television, sport, geography and history all come up, with drinks or bar credit usually going to both the highest- and lowest-scoring teams. The organisers call it the city's only English-speaking trivia night; their listings are pitched at people in their 20s to 40s, but teams are assembled on arrival.

The weekly date appears on the organisers' Good Times Buenos Aires Meetup group or Luma listing, where registration takes place. Arriving when the doors open gives a better chance of a table rather than a place at the bar. Spanish-language preguntas y respuestas nights also run in bars and breweries across the city, with more of a neighbourhood mix.

Why the UK kick-off changes here

Argentina stays on UTC−3 all year. Britain moves between GMT and BST in late March and late October, leaving a three-hour gap in British winter and a four-hour gap in British summer. From roughly November to March, 3pm in Britain is noon in Buenos Aires; from roughly April to October, it is 11am.

Cup ties, European fixtures and postponed matches have their own times, and broadcasters can move a fixture. The published UK kick-off and the season's clock setting together determine when to turn up locally.

Finding a screen rather than just an open pub

The Gibraltar, at Perú 895 in San Telmo, opens from 16:00 on weekdays and midday at weekends. It has English football, a pool table, darts, hand-pulled ales and fish and chips; its phone number is +54 11 4362-5310. The Shamrock, a basement Irish pub at Rodríguez Peña 1220 in Recoleta, lists the Premier League, Champions League and NFL. Its happy hour runs from 16:00 to 21:00, its kitchen opens late and its summer hours run from 16:00 to 03:00. Barú also screens some matches, though the programme varies by week; a group can book ahead.

Screen space matters when an Argentine league match clashes with English football: the local game usually gets the main screen, and a small bar may have just one good view. A message naming the fixture and local start time is more useful than asking whether a pub shows football. For example, ‘¿Transmiten Arsenal-Liverpool el domingo a las 12:30? ¿Con sonido? ¿Hay que reservar?’ asks about that match, sound and a table.

Rugby, cricket and early matches at home

Disney+ Argentina carries ESPN's Premier League coverage and the Six Nations. UK afternoon rugby can reach Buenos Aires in the morning or around midday, so a subscription is handy when the pub is shut. British streaming rights are country-specific: a UK login does not show English football here, and a VPN does not replace an Argentine subscription. At the UK Saturday 3pm slot, several league matches can overlap and the broadcaster chooses which appears on its main channel.

The Shamrock is the more predictable pub option for rugby; England and Scotland games can bring a mixed crowd to the Anglo-style pubs, while games against Argentina draw home support. Cricket is more a playing and social activity here than a regular pub screening. The cost of making it a regular evening

Pub prices in Palermo and Recoleta are generally gentler than London prices, though the bill depends on what you order. An illustrative food-and-drink ceiling is ARS 25,000 per person (about US$16) for each outing. A quiz and a match at that level would be ARS 50,000 per person in one week, before the ARS 6,000 quiz entry and Sube fares home; watching football in a pub has no separate screen charge once you order.

The most sociable plan may be the Tuesday quiz, where there is already a place on a team. For an 8.30am or 9.30am kick-off, breakfast and the home screen make more sense than waiting for a pub to open.
