Pub Quiz Nights, British Sports and Expat Social Events in Buenos Aires

There are moments when you need to be in a room full of British people shouting at a television. This is not cultural regression. It is emotional maintenance. Buenos Aires provides.

Pub quiz nights

The Shamrock (Rodríguez Peña 1220, Recoleta) — Thursday night pub quiz, the longest-running English-language quiz in BA. Teams of 4-6. Arrive by 8 PM to get a table. The quiz master is Irish, the questions are British, and the beer is Argentine craft. Entry: free, buy drinks.

Druid In (Reconquista 1040, Microcentro) — occasional quiz nights, usually the last Wednesday of the month. Smaller, more intimate. Good Guinness. The crowd is a mix of British, Irish, and Australian.

Sugar (Costa Rica 4619, Palermo) — monthly quiz nights hosted by the BA Brits community. More structured, more competitive, occasional prizes. Check the BA Brits WhatsApp group for dates.

The Temple Bar (Marcelo T. de Alvear 924, Retiro) — sporadic quiz nights, mainly around holidays (Christmas quiz, Easter quiz). Worth checking their Instagram.

Watching sports

Premier League

Every Saturday and Sunday, multiple Buenos Aires venues show Premier League matches. Argentine kick-off times are favourable: 3 PM UK = 11 AM or 12 PM Argentina depending on daylight saving.

Best venues:

  • The Shamrock — multiple screens, good atmosphere, open from 10 AM on matchdays
  • Druid In — Premier League every weekend, Champions League midweek
  • Sugar — the Palermo sports bar with the most screens
  • Cervecería Antares (multiple locations) — craft beer + big screens
  • Temple Bar — reliable for major matches

Six Nations and Autumn Internationals

Rugby is big in Argentina. The Shamrock and Druid In show all Six Nations matches. The atmosphere during England vs. any southern hemisphere team is genuinely electric because Argentine rugby fans will be cheering the opposition.

Cricket

Not shown in any pub, but the Buenos Aires Cricket Club streams major tests and The Ashes for members. See our cricket and rugby guide.

The Ashes, Wimbledon, Open golf

Niche events are harder to find on pub screens. The Shamrock usually accommodates requests for major British sporting events if you ask the owner. Otherwise, VPN + iPlayer or Sky Go from your flat.

British community events

St. George's Day dinner (April) — organised by the Anglo-Argentine community. Formal, ticketed. A good networking event for new arrivals.

King's Birthday celebration (June) — hosted by the British Embassy. Garden party with Pimm's. Register on the Embassy mailing list.

Christmas drinks (December) — multiple groups organise festive events: BA Brits, the school communities, the rugby clubs.

Burns Night (January) — the Scottish community in BA holds an annual Burns Supper at St. Andrew's Scots School. Haggis, whisky, and pipers. Open to all.

Monthly social — the BA Brits WhatsApp organises monthly pub meetups, park gatherings, restaurant outings, and cultural events. The most active social calendar for new arrivals.

The clubs

Hurlingham Club — the grand old Anglo-Argentine sporting club. Golf, cricket, polo, rugby, tennis, swimming. Membership is expensive (USD 1,000-5,000/year) but gives access to a community that has existed since 1888.

Buenos Aires Cricket & Rugby Club (BACRC) — sports and socialising. More accessible than Hurlingham. See our cricket and rugby guide.

British Arts Centre (BAC) — film screenings, literary events, theatre in English. Low-key, welcoming, culturally rich.
