For a pint and a British match in Buenos Aires, The Gibraltar in San Telmo is the clearest starting point. Hours, event programmes and what a bar is screening can change, so the venue's current listing matters more than an old round-up.

The Gibraltar for the pint and the match

The Gibraltar has been at Perú 895 since the late 1990s. Dark wood, a dartboard and a pool table give the place a recognisable pub feel, while its draught line-up reflects where it is: the listed 16 taps include Guinness, Stella Artois, Newcastle Brown Ale, Quilmes and rotating Argentine craft beers. Bar Británico stands at Brasil y Defensa beside Parque Lezama. It opened in 1926 as the pulpería, or corner store and bar, La Cosechera; English employees of the Ferrocarril del Sud, the British railway company running trains from nearby Constitución, later gave the bar its name. Its decades of 24-hour service drew writers and night workers. Ernesto Sábato wrote part of Sobre Héroes y Tumbas at its tables, a history also recorded by the city's tourism office. Coffee or a long sit makes more sense here than looking for draught bitter and live sport.

The New Brighton at Sarmiento 645 in Microcentro is another classic downtown bar with a British name. It runs Monday to Saturday and suits an unhurried meal or drink near the offices. If instead you want a central drink with a later, livelier atmosphere, The Temple Bar at Marcelo T. de Alvear 945 in Retiro has imported beers, whiskies, live DJs and a happy hour. Its name does not make it the Dublin original.

British kick-offs on an Argentine clock

Buenos Aires stays on UTC−3 all year, leaving it three hours behind the UK during GMT and four hours behind during BST.
