The Pub Quiz Scene in Buenos Aires

The pub quiz tradition arrived in Buenos Aires with the British community decades ago and has properly stuck. There are now half a dozen serious weekly quizzes around the central barrios, all run in English (with occasional Spanish-language rounds for the locals), and they are one of the best ways for arriving Brits to drop into the community without feeling like they have shown up uninvited.

The Tuesday Standard: The Gibraltar

The Gibraltar Pub (Perú 895, San Telmo). Tuesdays, 8pm start. Free entry. Team max 6.

The longest-running British pub quiz in Buenos Aires. Six rounds, mix of trivia, music, picture round, and one Argentine-flavoured round to keep the locals competitive. Prize is a bar tab. The crowd is roughly half British (a mix of long-resident expats and short-stay backpackers), half Anglophile Argentines, and a sprinkling of Australians, Irish, and South Africans.

Tactical advice: arrive by 7:30pm to secure a table for your team. By 8pm the place is packed. The food is genuine pub food (the Sunday roast is famous, but Tuesday quiz-night burgers are the play). Do not skip the half-time empanadas.

If you have just arrived in Buenos Aires and you want to fall into the British community in one evening, this is the place. By 11pm you will have a WhatsApp group invitation.

The Wednesday Craft-Beer Quiz: Antares Palermo

Antares Palermo Hollywood (Honduras 5500). Wednesdays, 8:30pm. Free entry.

Bilingual format — questions in English with Spanish translation, points awarded for either. The crowd skews younger and more porteño than The Gibraltar. The beer is excellent (Antares is Argentina's best craft brewery, originally from Mar del Plata). Prizes are 1L jugs of beer.

Particularly good for British arrivals who want to mix into a more porteño crowd while still having the quiz format as a social anchor.

Sunday Family Quiz: Buller

Buller Brewing (Junín 1747, Recoleta). Sundays, 7pm. Free entry.

The earliest start time of the lot, which makes it the realistic option for parents with young kids who cannot do an 11pm finish. Rounds include a kids' round (designed for the 8-12 age bracket). Atmosphere is more family-cheerful than competitive. Prizes are food-and-drink vouchers.

The Smaller Ones

The Shamrock (Rodríguez Peña 1220, Recoleta) runs an Irish-flavoured quiz on Thursday nights, less crowded, with strong Guinness pours.

Druid In (Reconquista 1040, Microcentro) runs a Tuesday quiz aimed at the after-work crowd. Smaller, less pure-British, more international.

Buena Onda Beer Co (various locations) runs occasional one-off quizzes, usually charity fundraisers — follow them on Instagram.

The Format

Most Buenos Aires pub quizzes follow the same structure:

• 6 rounds of 10 questions each, with a half-time picture round.
• Team max 6 — bigger teams disqualified or moved.
• Free entry for most; some charge ARS 1,000-2,000 per person.
• Prizes are bar credit, beer jugs, or food vouchers — never serious money.
• Quiz master in English with rounds occasionally translated.
• Half-time is 15-20 minutes and the kitchen often runs a special.

Etiquette and Tactics

Three things the British arrivals get wrong:

1. Arrive early. Tables fill up. Especially at The Gibraltar on Tuesdays.
2. Bring a Spanish-speaker on your team. The Argentine round will save you, especially questions on local football, tango, and 20th-century politics.
3. Tip the quiz master. Leave them ARS 2,000-5,000 at the end if you enjoyed the night. They are usually doing it for love and beer, not pay.
