Winter Escapes from Buenos Aires

Where British families in Buenos Aires actually go in the southern winter (June-August) — the ski options, the warm-weather escapes, the cultural city breaks, and the realistic budget for each.

Winter Escapes from Buenos Aires
By August everyone we know is either on a ski lift in Bariloche or eating ceviche on a Brazilian beach. The Buenos Aires June-August window is when expat WhatsApp groups become travel agents.

The Buenos Aires winter (June, July, August) is not severe — temperatures hover around 8-15°C, it rains on and off, and the days are short — but it is grey, and grey for ten weeks gets demoralising. By the second week of June the conversation in every WhatsApp group turns to "where is your winter break". The honest answer is that it depends on whether your family wants snow, sun, or culture.

Category 1: The Ski Trip

Bariloche (Argentine Lake District). The default. 2h15 flight, the country's biggest ski area at Cerro Catedral, full British-friendly infrastructure. See our Bariloche family weekend guide for the full breakdown.

Las Leñas (Mendoza Province). The serious skier's choice. Steeper, more challenging terrain, less family-oriented than Bariloche. 2h flight to Mendoza plus 5h drive. Expect USD 2,000-3,500/family for a week including flights and a mid-range hotel.

Cerro Castor (Tierra del Fuego). The southernmost ski resort in the world, near Ushuaia. Smaller, family-friendly, and the novelty value for British kids of skiing in Patagonia is enormous. 3.5h flight plus a 30-minute drive. USD 2,500-4,000/family for a week.

Chapelco (San Martín de los Andes). Smaller and quieter than Bariloche. 1h45 flight to San Martín. The town is charming, the skiing is good without being extreme. USD 1,800-3,000/family for a week.

For all of these, book the flights in March or April for July-August dates. Flights triple in price 6 weeks before departure as Argentine school holidays peak.

Category 2: The Warm-Weather Escape

The Buenos Aires winter is fairly mild, but there is real warmth two hours' flight north.

Florianópolis (Brazilian island). The classic Argentine winter beach destination. Two-hour flight to FLN, taxi to one of the dozens of beaches on the 40km island. Praia do Forte (north, family beach), Jurerê Internacional (north, fashionable), Praia Mole (east, surfer beach), Lagoa da Conceição (lagoon). Water is 22-25°C even in mid-winter. USD 2,000-4,000/family for 7 nights including flights and hotel.

Búzios (Brazilian coast, near Rio). A peninsula village 2h drive from Rio. Quieter than Rio, beach-focused, family-friendly. USD 2,500-4,500/family for 7 nights.

Salvador (Bahia, Brazil). Cultural and beach combination. 4h flight from Buenos Aires. The historic centre (Pelourinho) is colourful and walkable; the beaches at the north of the city are excellent. USD 2,500-4,500/family for 7 nights.

Montevideo and Punta del Este (Uruguay). A 75-minute Buquebus ferry from Buenos Aires. Punta is closed for the winter season (most things shut from May to October), so this is a low-season Montevideo trip — culture and food, not beach. USD 800-1,500/family for a 4-night break including ferry.

Category 3: The Cultural City Break

Salta (the colonial north). Two-hour flight, completely different climate (warm, dry, sunny in winter), Andean colonial architecture, the Tren a las Nubes, the wine country of Cafayate. USD 1,500-2,500/family for 4 nights including flights and a mid-range hotel. Best for families with kids 8+.

Iguazú Falls. See our Iguazú falls family guide. Winter (June-August) is actually a good time — fewer crowds, comfortable temperatures (18-25°C), water levels still high. USD 1,200-2,000/family for 3 nights.

Mendoza wine country. Two-hour flight, vineyard tours (yes, the kids come along — most bodegas have play areas and tasting menus that include grape juice for children), the Andes as a backdrop. Winter is the off-season for wine tourism so prices are low and bookings are easy. USD 1,500-2,500/family for 4 nights.

Córdoba and the Sierras. A more local choice. 1h flight to Córdoba, then drive to the Sierras for hill walking and the historic Jesuit estancias. The least touristy option on this list. USD 1,000-1,800/family for 4 nights.

Beyond Argentina

If you have the budget for an international trip:

Cusco and Machu Picchu (Peru). 4-hour flight, organised tours from Cusco. Best done with kids 8+. USD 3,500-5,500/family for 7 nights.

Santiago de Chile and Valparaíso. A 2-hour flight. Good city break with day-trip beach options. USD 2,000-3,500/family for 5 nights.

The Atacama Desert (San Pedro de Atacama, northern Chile). Genuinely otherworldly landscapes, suitable for older kids (10+). USD 3,500-5,500/family for 5 nights.

Cartagena (Colombia). 5-hour flight via a connection. Caribbean weather, colonial old town, family-friendly beaches. USD 4,000-6,500/family for 7 nights.

What to Plan for the Stay-Put Weekends

Not every winter weekend can be a flight. The realistic Buenos Aires winter weekend is:

  • Bath-warm afternoons at the bigger hotel pools (the Hilton, the Park Hyatt, the Four Seasons all sell day passes)
  • Long Saturday lunches in proper old-school parrillas with the heating cranked up (Don Julio, La Cabrera, El Pobre Luis)
  • Cultural Sundays at the MALBA, the Museo de Bellas Artes, the Recoleta Cultural Centre
  • Weekend escapes within the metro areaTigre Delta (1h by train from Retiro), San Antonio de Areco (90 min drive, gaucho country), Capilla del Señor (90 min drive, weekend countryside)

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do British families in Buenos Aires go for the winter holidays?

Three main categories: ski (Bariloche, Las Leñas, San Martín de los Andes, Ushuaia), warm-weather beach (Florianópolis, Búzios, Salvador in Brazil), and cultural city breaks (Salta, Mendoza, Iguazú, Córdoba). Bariloche is the default for first-timers; Florianópolis is the classic warm-weather escape.

When should I book winter holidays from Buenos Aires?

Book domestic flights in March-April for July-August travel — Argentine school holidays peak in mid-July and flights triple in price 4-6 weeks before departure. International flights to Brazil and Chile follow similar inflation; book 8-12 weeks ahead for best fares.

Is Florianópolis good for families in winter?

Yes — winter (June-August) in Florianópolis is the warmest period and water temperatures stay around 22-25°C, perfect for swimming. The northern beaches (Praia do Forte, Jurerê) are most family-friendly. Two-hour flight from Buenos Aires; expect USD 2,000-4,000 for a family of four for a week including flights and hotel.
