Shopping in Buenos Aires: Streets, Markets and Real Prices

A T-shirt can cost around ARS 2,300 at an outlet in Once and far more at a Palermo boutique. That is the first useful thing to know about shopping in Buenos Aires: the price depends on the street as much as the item. Leather jackets started at about ARS 200,000 on Calle Murillo in June 2026, while imported trainers in brand stores ran to ARS 300,000 and up in May. At the September 2026 reference rate of roughly ARS 1,520 to US$1, those prices are about US$1.50, US$130 and US$200 respectively.

For everyday shopping, Avenida Santa Fe in Palermo and Avenida Cabildo in Belgrano have chain stores and chemists. Once and Avenida Avellaneda in Flores reward a more patient hunt for inexpensive clothes; Palermo Soho has independent designers. A British card works in most established shops, while cash may change the price at an outlet or leather shop.

The street tells you what kind of shop to expect

Santa Fe near Alto Palermo and Cabildo near Juramento make sense when you want to try on familiar high-street styles without crossing town. Around Honduras and Gurruchaga in Palermo Soho, small designer runs and gifts tend to cost more. Once, around Avenida Pueyrredón and Lavalle, is outlet territory; Avenida Avellaneda near Nazca in Flores is a wholesale clothing street where minimum orders can affect the price.

For furniture and second-hand goods, Mercado de Pulgas is a covered flea market at Av. Dorrego 1650 in Colegiales. El Ateneo Grand Splendid at Av. Santa Fe 1860 in Recoleta is a bookshop inside a former theatre. Malls generally stay open late and on most Sundays; independent and wholesale shops keep their own weekday and Saturday hours.

What the 2026 price tags actually said

The lowest prices below came from a new Once outlet that attracted queues in May 2026. They are useful markers for bargain shopping, rather than typical prices across the city. Imported brands occupy a different bracket: national-brand trainers started at about ARS 90,000 that May, against roughly ARS 300,000 and up for imported pairs in shopping-centre brand stores.

The dollar equivalents use ARS 1,520 to US$1 in September 2026. A sterling comparison depends on the GBP rate your bank offers when you pay. Press reports gave slightly different prices for the same Once shop, including ARS 2,200 and ARS 2,299 for T-shirts, so a posted outlet price is best treated as a dated snapshot.

Paying without losing the discount

British Visa and Mastercard cards work in shopping centres, chains and most Palermo shops. Foreign-card conversion was close to the official rate in September 2026, although a UK issuer may add an overseas-use fee. If a terminal offers to bill in pounds, paying in pesos leaves the conversion to your bank. Keep the ticket (receipt) or factura (invoice) if you may need to exchange an item.

At smaller market stalls and some wholesale counters, the choice is cash or a local QR payment. Argentine wallets such as Mercado Pago require a local account. Cash also changes the calculation at some leather shops: Azteca Cueros advertised 30 per cent off in-store cash purchases in June 2026, within a broader range of 10 to 30 per cent on Murillo. A few smaller notes are more useful at a stall than one large bill; supermarkets are a place to break them.

Instalments are usually aimed at local shoppers. If a sign says cuotas mismo precio, the instalments are interest-free; otherwise spreading the payments costs more. The single-payment peso total is a better comparison than a large discount printed in the window.

The bargain streets have their own rules

Avenida Avellaneda sells clothing at wholesale prices, often per style with a minimum order. One manufacturer advertising in 2026 set five garments as its smallest order. Many counters also sell single pieces (venta al menudeo) for a higher unit price, so the attractive wholesale figure may not be what you pay for one shirt.

Distrito Moda, Modatex and Avellaneda a un toque publish wholesale listings that give a sense of the price level before a trip to Flores. Once's outlets are a different sort of bargain: stock changes constantly, and the stitching and fit matter more than any claim about the previous price. Argentine clothing sizes differ from UK sizes, making a fitting room especially useful for a jacket or jeans.

Sunday browsing and the tourist refund

The Feria de San Telmo fills Plaza Dorrego at Defensa and Humberto Primo, then runs along Calle Defensa to Avenida San Juan. More than 250 stalls trade on Sundays from 10:00 to 17:00. The morning tends to give you more room to browse and a fuller choice of antiques and souvenirs. Around Defensa and busy shopping centres, keeping a phone out of view while checking a map or payment is a sensible habit.

Foreign tourists taking qualifying purchases out of Argentina can recover the IVA through ARCA's digital Tax Free scheme under Resolución General 5843/2026. A participating shop issues the tax-free invoice at purchase, and the claim is validated at the airport on departure. For a resident doing the weekly shop, the choice is simpler: Santa Fe and Cabildo for convenience, or Once and Flores when time matters less than the price on the tag.
